Did he deserve it?
I completely disagree with what the helicopter pilot said about Timothy Treadwell. I do not see how anyone could say that about a person who truly loved the bears and was not harming them in any way. Some argue that it was unfair to take the girl along. I highly doubt that Timothy forced her to go, so it was her decision. I just do not think it's right to say that anyone deserves to be killed. Especially if the person did nothing to cause harm to someone or something else. Yes, he did something that was dangerous but he did it in order to learn more about the thing he was passionate about. I am sure that some people would say that flying a helicopter is dangerous, but would they really said that the pilot "got what he deserved" if he were to get into a crash? Probably not. I guess I felt bad for Timothy. He found something that he loved. Like he said, it was his life. The bears gave him a life. I do not understand how someone could say a thing like that when these trips meant that much to him.

It's funny that I didn't read your post till after I posted mine and we said almost exactly the same thing :)
ReplyDeleteI like the comparison of the helicopter pilot crashing. Timothy knew he was doing a dangerous thing, but he took it as his job, his calling. The helicopter pilot's job is to fly the airplane, and if a storm comes around and knocks him down, there's no way it's fair to say he deserves it.
I agree that the helicopter-flying analogy is a great one, Hannah. To be fair to the pilot -- and I recognize that what he said was at the very least extremely harsh -- I think that he and some others *did* think that Timothy caused harm to others. One other being Amy, which you address. The others were the bears. Bears were killed in response to his death, and at least some believe that the attention he brought to the Katmai National Park & Preserve has not been favorable to the bears -- it has drawn more visitors -- and perhaps (if the museum director is correct) Timothy's presence made the bears fear humans less (which is very much a danger for them).
ReplyDeleteI find a hard time agreeing with your statement that Timothy was in the right because he was doing something he loved. Just because somebody loves doing something, doesn't make it ok. For example, a serial killer may love killing people but it's obviously wrong. The question is when it is ok to do something you love. Personally, I see Timothy's action as detrimental to the bears (as Charles made points to), to Timothy, and to many people in Timothy's life.
