Dear Zachary
I would say that this documentary outraged me. However, I would not that that was the prodominant emotion running through me. I do not usually cry while watching movies, documentary or not, and I could not hold back the tears. This definitely struck something within me. I left the room feeling drained and a little depressed. I actually went and talked to my friend about the film and how it affected me. I started crying again. The way that Kuenne pieced together the story really got to me. It was not just a murder story. It was a story about relationships, love, and loss. It went into the lives and emotions of these people and it allowed the viewer to see how deeply this affected them. I believe that Kuenne would take this approach so that the viewer would feel the need to become involved in the matter. If someone watches this and feels a strong connection with the family I would think that they would be more likely to take part in their cause.

I find it an extremely moving film as well, Hannah. I think you point out something that is unique to Kuenne's filmmaking, which is the way that he pieced the whole thing together, and in fact -- in the midst of the outrage and sadness -- he managed to portray a substantial amount of love and positive feelings.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the reviews say that the point of the film was to create a sense of feeling moved to action. At the end you say that if you feel connected to the family you'll want to join their cause. By being moved to tears I'm wondering if your feeling connected to the family or rather just those who have passed away.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely vouch for the fact that Hannah was very, very moved by this film, as was I. And I agree with her in that this film, though it exposed some shady things with the government and some court dealings, and gave information on fixing the problems and helping David and Kate with their cause, that wasn't the focus of the film. The focus I believe was on the relationships and connections of everyone in it, including the deceased. Since we all as humans have similar connections, I think that's what made it so moving, so sad, and so scary. To think that a story like that could happen to any of us is terrifying and makes you think about your own life and the people around you and cherish what you've got.
